Defeat the Heat
Climate readiness, climate preparedness, and climate resilience are all different names for the important work of adapting to rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather.
But preparedness is just one of many good reasons to plant more trees, weatherize homes, and get to know neighbors. These actions also help build a more livable, thriving community, both now and into the future.
The drop-down menu of resources below provides information on what residents can do to meet climate-related challenges, minimize health risks and disruptions, invest in community prosperity, and defeat the heat!
In July 2023, residents in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids served as citizen scientists to gather temperature data on the hottest parts of our Corridor communities as part of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) heat island project.
Heat islands are hotspots in the city where temperatures are higher due to lack of tree cover, extensive pavement or concrete, and other factors. They can be up to 20° F hotter than nearby neighborhoods. Identifying these areas helps local decision-makers take actions to reduce the health impacts of extreme heat, which often disproportionately impact the most vulnerable.
Led by a team of local partners in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, volunteer citizen scientists traveled through neighborhoods in the morning, afternoon, and evening with heat sensors mounted on their vehicles. The sensors recorded temperature, humidity, time, and location once every second.
