As a part of celebrating National Public Works Week, May 19-24, the Open House will give residents rare insights into the City's wastewater program. The event will include tours of the facility, refreshments, educational opportunities, games, and more!
Iowa City's wastewater staff manage the 330 miles of sanitary sewer piping that runs from your and your neighbor's homes and businesses back to the facility. Each day, they process approximately 7.17 million gallons of wastewater. The Open House will provide a glimpse into how this often ignored service is done without interruption every day of the year.
National Public Works Week is an annual celebration of the vital importance and hard work of public works employees. Organized by the APWA (the American Public Works Association), the week spotlights the work that public works staff do in our communities. In Iowa City, our engineers, equipment staff, resource management staff, landfill operators, streets employees, water providers, and our wastewater staff, all contribute towards making Iowa City a great place to live.
Those wishing to attend should enter the facility off of Sand Road SE and Napoleon Street, by following signs to the facility directing visitors down Soccer Park Road. The facility is adjacent to Kickers Soccer Park, which will be hosting soccer matches during the event, but there will be ample parking at the facility.
If you need special accommodations to attend the event, please contact our Wastewater facility staff directly at 319-356-5170.
