A History Focused Puppet Festival

Mark your calendars for A History Focused Puppet Show presented by the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023 at the Upper City Park cabins!

Visitors will gather at the restored, historical log cabins in Upper City Park to celebrate history with Eulenspiegel Puppet Co. through three interactive puppet shows. This Hands On History program will also present historical music, crafts, and games before and after the shows. This is a drop-in event and there is no fee to attend.

Puppet Show Schedule

  • 1-1:45 p.m. Appleseed!
  • 2:45-3:15 p.m. Kate Shelley’s Train Rescue
  • 4:15-5 p.m. Uncle Rabbit's Adventures (Bilingual in Spanish and English)

Show Details:

Appleseed! tells the exciting story about Johnny Appleseed and his relationships with the settlers, the Indigenous peoples, animals, and plants around him.

Kate Shelley’s Train Rescue tells the story of the Iowa teenager who, in 1881, saved the train from plunging to a watery death. This tale unfolds in the pages of two giant pop-up books peopled with paper puppets, masks, and rod marionettes.

Uncle Rabbit’s Adventures is a bilingual Spanish/English show which uses large, beautifully crafted hand puppets and fun props to tell the story of a wealthy land-owning goat who doesn’t want to share with his neighbors.
