Heat pumps are highly efficient technology that can reduce your energy usage and in the process help fight climate change.

Ground source heat pumps (also known as geothermal systems) utilize underground tubing to draw warmer temperatures into a home during the winter and away from the home during the summer.

Air source heat pumps (sometimes abbreviated as ASHPs or simply referred to as "heat pumps") use a similar process to draw heat from the air and move it into or out of your home. They look and act like air conditioners and rely on the same technology, but heat pumps can work in "reverse" to heat a home in winter. Cold climate heat pumps can even work in subzero temperatures.

Because moving heat from one area to another requires far less energy than generating it, all kinds of heat pump systems are far more efficient than traditional combustion-based furnaces and boilers. A highly efficient furnace can be about 90% efficient (meaning every 1 kilowatt used by the furnace will produce the equivalent of slightly less than 1 kilowatt of heating energy), while heat pump systems can be 300%-700% efficient (producing 3-7 kilowatts of heating energy for every 1 kilowatt consumed).

Both geothermal systems and heat pumps are allowable by right as mechanical systems in Iowa City, meaning a simple permit is all that is needed by an HVAC contractor to add one to your home. In fact, many homes in Iowa City already have heat pumps helping keep them cool in summer and warm in winter. And federal tax incentives under the IRA cover 30% of the costs, up to $2000, for a heat pump and an uncapped 30% of costs for geothermal systems.
