Eligible Iowa City utility customers can receive a discount of 75 percent off the minimum water and sewer charges, 75 percent off the monthly storm water charge, and 75 percent off the refuse, recycling, and organics charges each month.

Criteria

Eligible customers meet the following criteria:

  • Participation in one of the following programs:
    • SSI (Supplemental Security Income), or SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)
    • FIP (Family Investment Program)
    • Title XX (Childcare Assistance)
    • SNAP Benefits
    • Elderly Tax Credit
    • Rent Reimbursement
  • All residents of household must be eligible for one or more of the programs to be eligible for the utility discount.


How to Apply

You must sign an “Authorization for Release of Information” form available from the Revenue Division of the City of Iowa City at 410 E. Washington Street, or you can fill out the online form, print, sign, and mail or deliver the signed copy to the appropriate agency, based on the answers to your questions on the form. Your eligibility will be verified by Johnson County Health & Human Services or the Social Security Administration, and if eligible, the discount will go into effect following verification.

Note: The discount will be in effect through June of the year in which you applied. To renew the discount, you must reapply anytime between March 1 and May 31. The discount will remain in effect one year for SSI/SSDI, FIP, Title XX, and SNAP, and two years for Elderly Tax Credit or Rent Reimbursement.
